Sept 02 - June 03 - CSV, Disability Office, University of Bradford
My job required me to take notes in lectures for students who require assistance. I was also on call throughout the day to aid students with mobility problems in tasks such as helping them around the University Library and other facilities, as well as aiding them in their general daily routine of getting to and from lectures.
Due to my experience in ICT, I also constructed a number of databases and documents for the Office, based on their requirements, which were discussed prior to the tasks. I was also on call to help repair problems with computers, or to help construct them. This often required me to go out to Halls of Residence and carry out maintenance in the students' rooms.
When I was not in lectures, I assisted in the office with answering and making telephone calls, making appointments, sending faxes and interacting with staff and students. Due to the confidential and delicate nature of the information held and maintained in the office, I was required to keep a level of professionalism and discretion when dealing with the students and staff I interacted with.
IT Assistant, Disability Office, University of Bradford
Continuing on from my work in the Disability Office as a volunteer, my job required me to maintain and create databases to manage and prepare statistics for the data relating to the students registered at the Office. I was called on to work on various projects ranging from setting up new computer systems (including installing Operating Systems from new CDs and Images), to writing a new desktop for the Disability Office listing various contacts and related links. I was also asked to organise equipment ordering from suppliers, as well as contacting students by letter, telephone or e-mail to arrange delivery or collection dates, which led to the creation of a new database system designed to store and process all of the relevant information and make it accessible to all of the staff. My job required me to liaise with other departments within the University to organise requisitions, loans of equipment and deliveries.
Student Activities
I am currently a member of a number of societies at the University of Leeds. As part of this, I arranged the creation of a society website and e-mail address, both of which I am responsible for maintaining.
As part of a team of assistants, I provide help for first year computing students with programming and software orientation. This requires explaining how to overcome coding problems as well as to answer more general questions about the system environment itself.
Off-shore Yachting
I have recently taken up the hobby of off-shore yachting, including trips to the North of France, the Channel Isles and the Isle of Wight, as well as sailing in the southern Baltic off the coast of Poland.
Acting, Singing & Compére - Dyke House School 1995-2000
In both "Shakespeare The Musical" and its sequel, which were performed for the students, staff and parents of the school, I had a principal acting and singing role, requiring a number of compulsory rehearsals both after school and at weekends, and singing sessions with the Head of Music.
With the staff production of a school fund-raising Pop Concert, I was asked to compére based on a script written by the Head of English. Again, this meant devoting part of my free time to attending rehearsals and dress rehearsals. I was also asked to arrange the projection system which was used to display the lyrics.
